On the one hand, the fact the character has a V.A.T.S. before having the pip boy, i assume this is an error because Bethesda is not Rockstar… so it’s a bad argument, but in the other hand i think he may be a synth anyway because when he talks about his memories from his prewar life, he can’t give a memory of his live before vault 111. Anyway I don’t know when could the institute replace the original with a synth. There is also the fact the institute is convinced gen-3 synth are not capable of self decision, so why would they replace the lone wanderer with a synth if they think they can’t take decisions like humans ? Also, the lone wanderer successfully passed the covenant SAFE test So idk…

My thoughts are that it's a buggy Bethesda game, and they easily overlooked this. Why not make a synth for Nora and a baby Shawn? Create all three to wake up together. A happy family with no vendetta against the institute. No loose ends. But no, they create one synth, give it the memory of it's wife being murdered and son kidnapped and leave it to chance?
